Details of the Olympiad in Sarthak's Own Words.
The international Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) was held at Taipei , Taiwan from the 14th to the 21st September 2009 . Seventeen countries participated at the IESO like USA , UK , Italy , Singapore , Japan , Korea , etc. All the members of the Indian team won bronze medals. The syllabus of the ieso consists of topics covering atmospheric sciences, hydrology, geology and astronomy. The IESO consisted of 3 individual exams and one team event consisting of students of different countries. Individual exams were the theory exam; the practical exam had usage of meteorological instruments for atmospheric sciences and telescopes for astronomy. The field exam was an on-site test of field geology .For the International team field investigation (ITFI) we were grouped in teams consisting of students from different countries. We were taken to two fault sites where the chichi earthquake had struck in 1999, here we had to take measurements and estimate the magnitude of the earthquake when it had struck. Then we had to prepare a presentation showing our results. My team won the best ITFI presentation award. 17 countries participated at the IESO like USA , UK , Italy , Singapore , Japan , Korea , etc. All the members of the Indian team won bronze medals. I had a lot of fun myself at the Olympiad. It was a lot of fun interacting with all the teams at the international.I made many new friends all over the world and over all it was a very enjoyable experience.
