CBSE Cryptic Crossword Contest 2015
25th of August, 2015
The CBSE Cryptic Crossword Contest (CCCC) -2015 is an All-India Cryptic Crossword Contest, organized by the CBSE since 2014. The competition is in two stages; a City Round and a National Final. The City Round in Pune was held at the Delhi Public School (DPS). Around 24 schools from Pune participated on the 25th of August, 2015. Bharati Ma’am, Aniket and I reached the venue at 8:15am. After registering our names, we were seated in the Multi-Purpose Hall, as we waited for proceedings to begin. During this while, we interacted with other participants and prepared for the contest. At 9:00am, we attended a special assembly for the contest, in which, a classical song and a classical dance were performed. After this, the Principal of DPS and the Chief Guest, Mr. Kushagra Singh, one of the founders of the competition addressed the gathering.
At 9:40am, the contestants were ushered to the competition venue, the school library, where we were given the crossword sheet and instructed on how to solve it.
We were given one hour, to fill up a crossword grid with nearly 30 clues, out of which 5-6, were solved for us. The ranking system would be on the basis of how many clues were answered and in case of a tie, how much earlier the sheet had been submitted, i.e. on the basis of the time taken to solve it.
After brainstorming for a while, we had solved most of the crossword in 15 minutes and after rechecking our answers, we submitted our sheet at 10:00am. We had attempted all the clues and were the first team to submit our sheet.
By 10:30am, only one other team had submitted their sheet, and we were allowed to leave the hall. From there, we were ushered to the cafeteria, where the teachers were waiting. We were given snacks. After this, we went back to the Multi-Purpose Hall where we waited Then, we returned to the assembly area for the Prize Distribution Ceremony, where, two consolation prizes and two runners-up prizes were given to Army Public School(APS), Hutchings High School, DAV School and Gurukul respectively, by the Principal and Chief Guest. Vikhe Patil Memorial School, Pune was declared the proud winner of the contest and we won the coveted trophy. In addition, we were awarded individual plaques, certificates and G.K. books. Later, speeches were given by the Principal and Chief Guest, followed by a photo session for the contestants, after which we dispersed. We reached VPMS at 1:00pm.
The contest was an excellent experience for all of us, and was a great learning experience. We learnt more about the art of solving cryptic crosswords and had an amazing time solving the crossword under the ticking clock. It was also a pleasant surprise to know that we solved all of the clues correctly within 20 minutes.
We really enjoyed the competition and look forward to the National Round in New Delhi.
